Ticking Off My #1 James Bond Location!

Schilthorn Piz Gloria 007

I managed to fulfil a lifetime {and very geeky} ambition over the winter, I visited my #1 007, James Bond location, the one at the very top of the list.

As far as I’m concerned, it is the ultimate, most iconic of all the 007 film locations. Piz Gloria, the Schilthorn, from ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ {or OHMSS, 1969}.

Piz Gloria is a restaurant perched on top of the Schilthorn Mountain, at 2970 m {9744 ft} which rises up above the Lauterbrunnen valley.

The history of the restaurant is entwined with the making of OHMSS and it provided the perfect lair for Bond’s arch-enemy Blofeld, where he could brainwash pretty girls to… well you need to watch the film for that!

The restaurant offers a James Bond 007 Breakfast Buffet for early risers. An absolute must for any Bond Fan but you really don’t need to be a Bond fan, or even have seen the film, to thoroughly enjoy the experience, and the delicious breakfast.

We took the 8.55 Cable car from Stechelberg to begin our accent of the mountain. It takes 4 separate cable cars to reach the summit, taking about half an hour in all:

Stechelberg> Gimmelwald> Mürren> Birg> Piz Gloria, through incredible scenery.

When you finally get to the top, you see the complete view. It is a truly breathtaking panorama.

We had pretty good weather, although the clouds crept in a little while we were eating. We were surrounded by white peaks, you could see far down the valleys to lake Thun and beyond.

The extensive breakfast buffet was well worth the trip up, my word! Delicious food, and a glass of sparking wine {Prosecco if you’re interested!}.

Oh and I forgot to mention, the restaurant revolves!

We sat there, eating our breakfast {off plates with the 007 logo, and the cups too!}, sipping our prosecco as we gently rotated with this unbelievable scenery surrounding us.

It sounds serene, to be honest we were giggling with excitement like school children over the cable car trip, the view, the food, the wine, the Bond and the fact that the restaurant was revolving!

I’m afraid I had to do the obligatory pose, which I do when I visit an iconic Bond location!

I was thrilled to recognise features inside the building from the film, one of my favourite of the 007 films. I should point out that I don’t specifically travel to see Bond locations.

They inspire me to travel, he ends up in some incredible destinations all over the world {and out of it- Moonraker!} and if I’m somewhere where a film has been set, I’ll look into visiting the location/locations, especially if they’re as iconic as this.

The view back down was just as spectacular, chocolate box pretty Swiss Alpine villages, waterfalls and skiers making their way downhill.

If you were wondering, here are a few of the other poses I pulled at Bond locations round the globe!

{I’ve been to more, but I didn’t pose}

It may be a bit geeky, but hey, as you can see, it takes me to some AWESOME places!

Stick around!

Festive Lucern there was an Advent Calendar House!

Bernese Hazelnut Tart a little bit of Swiss baking in a Swiss kitchen!

Two Little Alpine Christmas Markets Getting festive up in the Swiss mountains.

A Snowy Hike From Mürren Snow beautiful you won’t believe it!

Should you find yourself in Las Vegas drop me a jingle and I can take you around to some locations from Diamonds Are Forever.

  5. I fell in love with mountains and the villages that surround it when I visited Switzerland over the summer. Never heard of Bond restaurants though, but it sounds so interesting and delicious! My mom is a big 007 fan, she would definitely enjoy it and the scenery! I’m adding it to my travel bucketlist, thank you 🙂
